Exist in Photos

Family Photography

Women. I’d like to share a movement with you. One started by a very talented and passionate photographer called Sue Bryce. It is the #existinphotos movement.

Check Your Photos

OK, open your photos in your phone. Scroll back and see how many photographs there are of you. Now take out all those which have one of those snap chat filters on (you know, the dog faces and butterfly crown ones). Now take out the selfies you’ve taken as well. How many photos of yourself do you have? How many photos of you and your kids do you have that was taken by someone else? I'm going to hazard a guess that its either a) not very many or b) none at all. Probably very few, if they do exist, have actually been printed and displayed in your home.

The reason I am asking is because I want you to consider why this is.

One day your children or loved ones will look for photographs of you. What will they find? I’m sure we have all been through a period in our life where we didn’t want to be photographed because we were down on ourselves or the way we looked. This stops us from wanting to be in photographs because either we are embarrassed or we didn’t feel good enough to be in them. The reality of not having portraits or even snap shots of you and your loved ones is very present in many families. If something happens to you today or tomorrow would your family have a beautiful portrait of you to remember you by? Or even a snapshot? For many people the answer is no.

Now think about this:

“Beauty – the light that shines out of peoples eyes when they look at you” – Sue Bryce

Each woman has an internal radiance and beauty which is unique to them. If someone asked your child, your Sister or Mum to talk to them about you, what do you think they would say? I can guarantee they would talk about your warm heart, your kindness or how you are always there for them. They are not going to mention the extra few pounds you’ve put on or your crooked nose or double chin. Its because those things simply do not matter to them. It is not what they see when they look at you. When you are no longer around they are certainly going to want to look back at photos of the Mum they loved or the Sister they cherished. So please, get someone to take some photos of you. By yourself or with your family, siblings, friends. You owe it to your loved ones to take the time to create this legacy for them to cherish. This is the #existinphotos movement. It is important and I encourage you all to get on board with it.

We think we will have time to gather those photographs, to lose weight, to gain more confidence but this isn’t always the case. Life is fragile so please don’t act like life is a dress rehearsal because it is not and we don’t know what’s round the corner.

Take That Photograph

Professional photographers are experienced in being able to draw out that beauty that your loved ones see and will take the most precious photographs of you and your family. But it doesn’t need to be a professional who does it. Just get someone to. Your children and loved ones will cherish this and it will become the most important thing your family will ever own. The value created in a family portrait is more important than anything else you could ever buy.

I challenge you to join the #existinphotos movement. We owe it to ourselves and our children.
